Important Pre Civil War Masterpiece!
This is an amazing piece of art in a massive size. This type of quilt would be used on the high poster beds and under the bed would be a trundle bed. The quilter's of the era had to create very large size quilts for this reason. This example is one of the largest we have found in a long time in this pattern. It was such a joy to acquire it from a private collection. It was originally found in Lancaster County Pennsylvania.
The pattern called, "feathered star", and in a turkey red fabric of the era.
What I found so interesting about this quilt, is how the border was finished. The quilting patterns on two sides are feathers that vine and on two sides a cable design. This maker wanted to add a special signature to her quilt by making two quilting patterns. She also placed her initial in embroidery on the border. Signing her quilt in her own way. I love this little touch added to the quilt. Makes you wonder about the maker, her story and the story behind this breath taking quilt.

The quilt is in wonderful condition. Some age spotting.
I love thinking about why a quilt was made. Was it a wedding gift ? A quilt so impressive it had to be made for a special reason.
