An early chintz quilt in a striking Sunburst Compass design ☀️
Circa 1830–1840
This chintz features a poudré ground with delicate tiny dots. The fabric is roller printed and exceptional in design. The printing process was laborious, involving multiple steps to achieve the rich, layered effect seen here. I see hints of Prussian blue within the pattern.
Notice, too, that the background blocks feature a printed design, adding depth and visual interest.
Measures 98 x 82 inches
Hand quilted at 10 stitches per inch Hand pieced Binding is hand sewn
For a quilt of this early date, it remains intact. There is age spotting, toning, and areas of fabric wear consistent with its history. Some printed accents show areas of loss, along with some color-lift spotting. It is a wonderful study piece.
