Important  Broderie Perse Chintz QUILT Signed Ruthana Needles 1841 Museum Find

This is a once in a lifetime important quilt find. In all my years of quilt collecting and selling, we have never found a Broderie Perse quilt just like this . 

Spectacular, grand, there's not enough words for have wonderful this piece it. 

Quilt Pattern ~

I'll describe the quilt pattern first. Starting with a beautiful center medallion of chintz broderie perse applique. You ask what this type of applique is. The maker would painstakingly cut out the pictorial designs from the early roll printed chintz fabric. The fabrics would then be appliqued to the quilt. This example has flowers, multiple birds. In the center there's a water fountain and butterflies. Urns with flowers perch birds in the inner corners. 

There's a center diamond pattern in the center in an early green print filled with triangles. Surrounding the center are 3 borders of pyramids and sawtooth. The border frames this entire work of art in floral chintz. 

Dated ~ We found a signature possibly reads Ruthana Needles and dated 1841

The estate gave me information that the quilt was possibly found Philadelphia. 

Quilt Talk ~

The quilt is in wonderful condition at 185 years old. 

Measures 109 x 108 inches

The finest hand quilting with lush trapunto stuffed work. We counted areas as tiny as 16-18 or more stitches per inch. All finely executed. 

The applique is hand. 

Hand pieced

The quilt has a few small places of fabric wear, which is extremely minor. The quilt is sturdy. The tape binding has come off in a few places. It's still present and can be reattached. Only one small area was missing a piece. There's age spotting and toning which is expected with a quilt this early. 

A museum find that should be on display in either the Baltimore Museum of Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art or the colonial Williamsburg Foundation Museum.
